Causes & Symptoms

Multiple medical conditions predispose individuals to neuropathy which occurs with damage to the nerve resulting in pain, numbness, tingling, swelling and weakness. It may be caused by physical trauma to a nerve, cancer or cancer treatment, diabetes, toxic substances, long-term alcohol abuse, or infection.

Treatment

Address the underlying cause with control of blood sugars in diabetics, treatment of infection, and correcting vitamin deficiency. Medications include pain relievers, anticonvulsants such as gabapentin or pregabalin, antidepressants, topical creams, or patches. Recent improvements in advanced pain therapies, including spinal cord stimulation and DRG stimulation, often lead to dramatic and previously unattainable improvement in nerve pain/ neuropathy conditions.
